“Spyware” ang turing ni Reddit CEO at co-founder Steve Huffman sa video-sharing app na TikTok.
“Maybe I’m going to regret this, but I can’t even get to that level of thinking with them. Because I look at that app as so fundamentally parasitic, that it’s always listening, the fingerprinting technology they use is truly terrifying, and I could not bring myself to install an app like that on my phone,” ani Huffman sa Social 2030 venture capital conference, Pebrero 2020.
“I actively tell people, ‘Don’t install that spyware on your phone,’” dagdag niya.
Ayon kay researcher Matthias Eberl, tina-track ng fingerprinting–na tinutukoy ni Huffman–kung sinong TikTok user ang nanonood at nagbabahagi ng mga video, parehong sa app at sa website.
Pinabulaanan naman ng TikTok ang paratang ni Huffman, at giniit na ginagamit nila ang kanilang fingerprinting sa pagtukoy ng malicious o inappropriate behavior ng kanilang browser.
“These are baseless accusations made without a shred of evidence,” sabi ng isang TikTok spokesperson sa TechCrunch.
Sabi naman ni Eberl, gumagana pa rin naman umano ang website kahit naka-disable ang scripts ukol sa fingerprinting.
Bukod kay Huffman, nababahala rin si Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg sa parent company ng TikTok na Bytedance, na aniya ay isang “Chinese company, if people are concerned about data I think there’s a lot to be concerned about there.”
