Dahil sa hijab, high school runner nadiskwalipika

Nasayang lang ang 22:22 personal best na pagtakbo ng isang high school athlete dahil diniskwalipika siya sa pagsusuot ng hijab sa 5K race.

Nadismaya si Noor Alexandria Abukaram, isang cross country runner sa Sylvania Northview High School sa Ohio, nang hindi niya nakita ang pangalan sa mga listahan ng oras na tinapos ng mga atleta ang district meet noong Sabado, Oktubre 19, 2019.

“It was like your worst nightmare to have to compete and then find out that you got disqualified and it’s because of something that you love,” ani Abukaram sa CNN.

“Why should you have to sacrifice your religion and a part of who you are to run, to do another thing that you’re very passionate about?,” himutok pa nito.

Unang beses umano itong nangyari sa kanya sa tatlong taon niyang pagsali sa mga patimpalak sa soccer, track and field, at cross country running.

Sa isang pahayag, giniit naman ng Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) ang ginawang pagdiskwalipika dahil hindi umano nagsumite ng waiver ang atleta na magsusuot ito ng religious headwear.

“Cross country runners may participate in competitions with religious headwear, provided the runner has obtained a waiver from the OHSAA and submitted it to the head official before the race, since it is a change to the OHSAA uniform regulations. The official was simply enforcing this rule since a waiver had not been submitted,” tugon ng asosasyon sa CNN.
