Umamin ang isang opisyal ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) na mas marami ang nalilikhang healthcare waste kada araw kaysa sa kapasidad ng mga treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facilities sa bansa.

Sa deliberasyon ng House Committee on Appropriations ngayong Lunes, sinabi ni Environmental Management Bureau Assistant Director Visminda Osorio na ang kabuuang healthcare waste sa bansa hanggang noong Hunyo 30, 2021 ay umaabot sa 634 million metric tons.

“The capacity of existing TSD facilities…. is approximately 15,383.19 metric tons per day,” sabi ni Osorio.

Hindi rin umano lahat ng rehiyon ay mayroong TSD facility. Ang mayroon lamang ay ang Region 1, 3, 4-A, 5, 7, 8, 10 at National Capital Region.

“The generated healthcare waste…. is approximately increase in (higher by) 11.30% of the total capacities of the total TSD facilities nationwide,” dagdag pa ni Osorio.

Mayroon umanong 47 TSD facility sa bansa pero 25 lamang dito ang maaaring gamitin para sa pathogenic o infectious wastes (M501 waste).

“Right now, what we are doing is those healthcare waste facilities are advised to do the initial disinfection prior to disposal, and part of the regions that has no TSD facility, they do it through safe burial or concrete vaulting within the premises,” sabi pa ni Osorio.
