Kinastigo ni Senate Minority Leader Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III ang plano ng Department of Agriculture (DA) na mag-angkat ng libong tonelda ng sibuyas dahil malaki umano ang magiging epekto nito sa mga lokal na magsasaka.

Nauna nang ibinunyag ng DA, na pinamumunuan ng Pangulo, ang kanilang plano na mag-angkat ng 22,000 metriko tonelda ng sibuyas para masolusyunan ang tumataas na presyo ng sibuyas sa bansa.

Subalit may nakikitang problema si Pimentel sa nasabing plano dahil tiyak umanong maapektuhan ang kita at negosyo ng mga lokal na magsasaka.

Aniya, hindi umano kailangan pang mag-angkat dahil panahon na umano ang anihan nito.

“We should not fall into that trap. The move could negatively affect the income and business of local farmers who are about to harvest locally-produced onions,” sabi ni Pimentel.

“The DA should no longer import onion. There is no need to import onions since it’s harvest season already,” dagdag aniya.

Paliwanag pa ni Pimentel: “There is always a time lag. If we authorize importation now, the actual importation will happen maybe weeks or months later. That will coincide with the availability of locally produced onions.”

Sa planong pag-angkat, sinabi ni Pimentel na lumalabas na pinapayagan din ang mga hoarder at mga illegal importer na kumita ng malaki sa ‘peak season’ ng nakaraang kapaskuhan.

“It looks like we allowed the hoarders, the illegal importers and the price fixers to profit from the peak season of Christmas. Now, we will bite into the trap and if we now agree with the importation of onions, we will now be affecting the local farmers,” diin ni Pimentel.

Kinuwestiyon din ni Pimentel kung bakit matagal bago nagdesisyon ang DA na mag-angkat gayong puwede namang itong gawin sa panahon ng ‘off season’.

“Why decide only now when the harvest season of locally-produced onions is already approaching,” tanong ni Pimentel.

“It’s too late to import onions. It will not do our farmers and consumers any good if we import at this point when locally-produced onions are about to be harvested,” dagdag niya.

“Magsama-sama na lang tayong labanan itong hoarding and price fixing. If we could boycott the purchasing of these imported onions or minimize our consumption, let’s do it,” sabi pa ng senador. (Dindo Matining)
